The STM Impulse laptop backpack is a 20 litre backpack that is designed to be the ultimate mobile office transporter. Available in black or grey, the Impulse is great for carting every tech and non tech item you have with you on a trip, or just around the city. Aesthetically, the STM Impulse probably doesn’t belong on a catwalk, but does have a discreet, non-offensive and versatile look. It’s rounded rectangular shape with 90 degree zip gives a bit of interest and less of a boring office corporate issued look. Still the STM Impulse will be at home on your travels, in the office, for your studies, or during your daily commute.
STM Impulse – Construction
The STM Impulse is made out of 300D velocity poly – a soft-ish hard wearing canvas like polyester that should be a bit water resistant. Inside, the lining is made out of a combination of a softer 200D polyester with a softer nylex lining for your laptop. Thick padding is featured on the back with a channel through the middle to allow your back to breathe and avoid the dreaded sweaty back. The zips are all thick and seem heavy duty enough, along with nice consistent thick stitching to make sure it holds together to handle the pressures of daily use. Nothing really to complain about, but it would be great if STM went just a bit further and equipped the bag with a rain cover or similar. Granted not many other laptop bags have this, especially at this price point, but it would just really make this stand out.
STM Impulse – Storage
That’s right, the STM Impulse laptop backpack has so many different sections of storage, it has warranted its own section. If you still need more pockets, then perhaps its time to throw a few things out and re-assess. Let’s start with the rear-most pocket. This opens up nice and wide, with a 10+ mm thick padded pocket for laptop up to 15″. No strap is included for smaller laptops, although the thick padding and snug fit should ensure minimal movement. At the rear of this pocket is a separate soft lined smaller pocket for your tablet, or e-reader devices. Extra space is allowed in the middle for other miscellaneous items. You could probably actually fit another laptop in there!
Next the middle pocket. Nice and large, this is ideal for books, or other paperwork. Another thinner pocket is included here as well to help keep you organised. Up the front, a 90 degree angled pocket opens to reveal a zipped pocket, pen holders, and another pocket for your phone. A key clip is also included for your keys. On the bottom sits a small wide mouth pocket for chargers, or other peripherals. Finally two pockets on the sides allow you to put a drink bottle or quickly squeeze things in on the go. A strap that allows you to attach the backpack to your rolling luggage completes the bag.
STM Impulse in Daily Use
In daily use the STM Impulse is like a Labrador. It’s smart, dependable and a great companion. Initially I thought the straps for the backpack would be a bit thin, and would have liked more padding, however to be honest they were more than comfortable even with a full load. I came to appreciate how quickly I could access my things, as well as the ease of taking a laptop out and throwing it back in again. It also sits on your body nice and straight to balance out those heavier loads.
STM are onto another winner with the usability of the Impulse. It’s impressive the thought has been put into functionality, and as strange as it is to say. The bag just works and handles all you can throw at it. Priced at a very reasonable $120, the Impulse is a good reliable choice for a backpack that will be able to serve you for years to come. If you’re prefer a messenger, check out the STM Scout 2 as another great option.
